Excel QuickSkills
Formatting Data in Cells Fractions StepbyStep

How to format data, Fractions

  • Right click on the cell you would like to format

  • Select "Format Cells"

  • In the Dialogue box choose the "Number" tab

  • In "Category:" select "Fraction"

  • Set the Type to "Up to one digit"

Having a maximum of three digits on the numerator and the denominator can improve the approximation of the result.

Excel automatically simplifies the fractions to find the lowest possible (whole number) numerator and denominator. So 12/16  automatically becomes 3/4.

The "Sample" function allows you to view how a value will appear as a fraction given the options you have chosen.

Of course the "Sample" depends on the value(s) you have chosen to see. In this demo it is the second value in the first column.
