Method I (highlight both columns)
The Line chart wizard interprets the x axis data as another series and labels the x axis by default.
The chart wizard only recognizes the y column as actual numerical data. The data in the other column is treated as a unique label for each data point in the y column.

(highlight y axis data then x axis)
The chart wizard only recognizes the y column as actual numerical data. The data in the other column is treated as a unique label for each data point in the y column. In ALL cases regardless of how you highlight the columns the line chart will misinterpret the data in the x column as labeling information or an independent data series.
