What is a bar chart ?
The bar chart is normally used of display change over a time period. The length of each bar repesents the value of the data point for a given variable.

When are bar charts best used ?
To compare absolute values or quantities with each other and at the same time display the relative size of the value compared to the base line value. In most cases the base line is zero and so each bar has a length related to the absolute value of the data point.

comparing groups or classes of data.

What is the difference between a bar chart and a column chart ?
There is no significant diference between and bar chart and a column chart, "Column" charts in excel are vertical and "Bar" charts are horizonal. They both use a "bar" to represent data using the length of the bar the represent a value. How to create a simple column chart (single independent variable)

How to create a column chart of two independent variables

Creating a column chart of multiple independent variables (automatic)

Creating a column chart of multiple independent variables (imposed series)

Comparing column chart representations of the same data.
Comparing column charts represnations and line charts representation of the same data.
In some cases it can be benificial to display data using another type of chart in excel. When the monthly avrage rainfall for each region is displayed for a period of tweleve months the relative changes between values is ghard to see as the bars begin to interfer with the communication of the data. The relative change in average rainfall is hard to see as the clusters of data contain too much visual information. As te relative laue of the data points to each other and the relative value of the datsa points to the base line are displayed at the same time.

When the same data is displayed as a line chart and each region is overlaid clear comparisons can be made as the it becomes more important to asses the relative value of data points.
