Creating A Simple Layer Animation

How to create a simple position animation of a layer:

  • Select the layer you want to animate.
    • Hover over the layer tag at the top left corner of the layer.
    • Press and hold the left mouse button.
    • Drag the layer down to the timeline.
    • Release the mouse button add the layer to the timeline.
  • In the timeline:
    • Press and hold down the left mouse button on a middle frame.
    • Drag the frames along the timeline to set the starting frame.
  • Select the last frame in the animation
    • Drag the frame to set the length of the animation.
    • With the last frame still selected reposition the layer in the web page.
  • Then in the timeline:
    • Reposition the play head (drag to the first frame on the timeline).
    • Press and hold the "Play" button to test the animation.
    • Check the "autoplay" checkbox.
    • Press "OK" in the dialogue window to automatically insert the onload behavior.
  • Preview the animation in the browser.

Note: Dreamweaver inserts a behavior that uses an onload event to control when the "animation" begins playing. So when the page has successfully finished loading the "animation" will automatically begin playing the timeline. The initial delay in the movement of the layer in this example is because the motion in the "animation" does not begin until frame 30 on the timeline. The "animation" must play through each of the frames where the layer is doing nothing until it reaches a frames where the layer changes position.
